Formed 190,000 years ago, the lava swept its way down the river beds, and as the lava drained, the top layer cooled and formed a hard crust which became the roof of the tubes. These tubes are the oldest standing and best preserved systems anywhere in the world. The flow of the lava would have filled the Sydney Harbour in six days, and is the longest lava flow from any single volcano – 160 kilometres. The Undara Lava Tubes are one of Queensland's most unusual natural attractions, and make one very exciting and interesting place to visit.
