Estuary & river fishing

Cairns is on the banks of Trinity Inlet with many little creeks and waterways winding their way down to the Ocean. This area is also fortunate to have the Russell, Mulgrave, Daintree rivers and the Hinchinbrook Channel all close by.These Rainforest and Mangrove lined waterways make excellent hatcheries and breeding ground for some of the most spectacular sports fish such as Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Sooty Grunter, Trevally, Fingermark, Perch, Queenfish, King Salmon and the list goes on. The estuary boats used for this type of fishing are custom made and general length around 16 ft.

Light tackle sport fishing

Light tackle sportsfishing

Because of the reputation of the Cairns fleet for big fish, the light tackle fishing of the area is sometimes overlooked. The fact is that the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef is incredibly rich in plankton and baitfish, in turn attracting virtually every species of pacific gamefish such as Wahoo, Spanish Mackerel, Yellowfin Tuna, Dolphin Fish, Barracuda, Scaly Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, Trevally, Queenfish and many moore. Using 12 to 20 lb line, custom made Light Tackle Sportsfishing rods and only the best in reels like Penn, Shimano, Abu you just not sure what fish will strike next.
The best time for light tackle fishing inside the reef is February to July and outside is July through to January.

Heavy tackle Marlin fishing

Marlin fishing from Cairns

According to international fishing magazines Cairns is rated number one in gamefishing spots in the world, which is no surprise to any one who has experienced what it has to offer. Anglers who have long tackled the strength and speed of the Black Marlin along the reef have been trying to catch that 2000 pound fish for years. A number have been hooked and lost, some after battles that have lasted an astonishing 24 hours, Marlins are prolific from Cairns to Lizard Island a distance of about 250 kms. They move in from the Pacific during the period from late August to December to spawn in the warm waters on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. The largest Black Marlin is female, as the male only grows to around 400 pounds. There are many Heavy Tackle Tournaments each year from Cairns to attract anglers from all corners of the globe. The boats take a maximum of 4 anglers. You can join up with one of the share charters or sole charter a boat. For tournament dates contact us.
