Light tackle sportsfishing
Because of the reputation of the Cairns fleet for big fish, the light tackle fishing of the area is sometimes overlooked. The fact is that the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef is incredibly rich in plankton and baitfish, in turn attracting virtually every species of pacific gamefish such as Wahoo, Spanish Mackerel, Yellowfin Tuna, Dolphin Fish, Barracuda, Scaly Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, Trevally, Queenfish and many moore.
Using 12 to 20 lb line, custom made Light Tackle Sportsfishing rods and only the best in reels like Penn, Shimano, Abu you just not sure what fish will strike next.
The best time for light tackle fishing inside the reef is February to July and outside is July through to January.
